Top Items in My Doula Bag That You Can Bring to Your Birth!

I have had a lot of questions about what I bring with me to a birth as a doula. I wanted to share some of my favorites with you because there are items you can bring for your own birth whether you have a doula present or not.

Setting the mood:

When I walk into a hospital room, I like to see how mama is handling the contractions and set the tone. Being in a relaxing environment naturally makes the people in the environment more relaxed. With permission, I dim the lights or draw the shades and set up LED candles around the room. I then set up a diffuser. I usually diffuse lavender, citrus or peppermint depending on the client and their preferences. Sometimes they bring their own oils they wish to be diffused. I then set up a bluetooth speaker and play relaxing music or whatever mama requests.

These are simple items you can pack for your birth to help make a hospital room feel homey and calming.

Doula tools:

I pack massage tools, although I mostly use my hands, for counter pressure and comfort. A rebozo is also always in my bag to help with hip squeezes, various positions and maneuvers. I also like to bring a paper fan. Nausea and getting hot during contractions are super common, having a something to fan mama with during contractions can be beneficial. If she is nauseous, I like to add one drop of peppermint on the fan and gently fan her. Honey sticks are also great to have on hand in case mama needs a little energy boost.

For me:

I like to always have a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, ponytails and chapstick on me. If I am at a birth for a long time, I like to be able to freshen up by brushing my teeth and reapplying my deodorant. I pack a couple of snacks, phone charger and always dress in layers. Hospitals are usually cold but sometimes room are warmer for the mama’s preference.

It is important for me to unwind from a birth when I get home. I always shower and then run some Koi Healing Balm on my tight muscles from massaging and squeezing hips for hours. I then take a Koi Sleep-Aid Shot to help me relax. I may be trying to go to bed in the middle of the day depending on when I get home from a birth. Self-care is important as a doula. Our job is physically, mentally and sometimes emotionally draining.

I have an awesome discount code for you if you would like to check out the Koi products I use to unwind. Use code, elizabethjoy20 for 20% off!

I would love to hear what you brought to your birth that helped you out!
